2009, Year of the Share

By now you’ve seen all the “best & worst” lists and the predictions.  We rush into 2009 expecting Change.gov and hoping it’s for the better.  Whether in good times or bad we experience life together by sharing - sharing brings us together.  We share to support our friends and sometimes find new friends.

This year, more than ever, we are migrating the human experience to the online world. Younger generations may never experience the 20 year high school reunion like their parents did because their social network will be a persistent and omnipresent support community.  This year I’ve unfortunately witnessed a few human tragedies but have been astonished at how the speed of the network organized friends and loved ones to support each other in inspiring ways.

When we were forming ShareThis and told people that we would make sharing simple, admittedly we received some quizzical looks.  Is sharing hard?  Why is it important? We believe that sharing is a fundamental part of how we connect with and relate to people, something that every one of us needs and desires.

Sharing isn’t new, but the things that can be shared and the ways we can share have increased dramatically… but sometimes the technology gets in the way. We share in different ways with different people.  Some of us use cool new tools like Twitter and others like to stick with Email.  It’s all good. References to sharing across the Web have been skyrocketing.

People share what matters.  We conducted a study with Forrester earlier this year and found that the number one reason people share is to help someone they know benefit .  Not only do we share what matters, we share because we care!   In a world of information overload, sharing cuts through the clutter.

ShareThis was launched just over one year ago and the growth has been amazing.  We appreciate each and every one of our publisher partners who joined us this year and to the users who have made ShareThis the people’s choice for sharing - we promise to keep innovating and listening to your feedback in the coming year.

However you plan to ring in the New Year, I wish you the best and look forward to sharing 2009 with you.

Some I don’t even remember hearing about (because you wouldn’t forget tales like these!) and others I have read before and still don’t believe. It’s Festivus for the Rest of Us!

The ShareThis team has a lot to be thankful for (or so they say via email and phone to me) so I thought I’d send out a little bit of our holiday cheer and some family fun pictures to prove it!

The new design cuts down load times for ShareThis without sacrificing benefits like the mashed-up address book and automatic updates. Your address book fields will populate faster saving you some time (to read the ShareThis blog) and making your experience even better!

We have also included three new social web services:  Yahoo! Buzz, LinkedIn and Sphinn.  All can be found on the Social Web tab.

ShareThis at Cincinnati Social Media Breakfast

This morning Tim, JB, and myself were at the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame for the Social Media Breakfast. The SMB is a monthly meeting of Internet and marketing professionals.  This time around Tim gave a talk, and it was a total sellout. Actually, there was a waiting list in case people couldn’t make it.

Thanks to Kevin Dugan for having Tim speak. We had a good time talking to everyone about ShareThis — here’s a few pictures from the event.

The One-Two Punch - ShareThis Takes Home the People’s Choice and Blogger’s Choice Awards

Mashable’s Open Web Awards for 2008 have come and gone… and ShareThis has come and won! I’m totally stoked that people seem to really enjoy ShareThis - thanks for all who voted to make this happen.

We’re really proud of our footprint in the sharing space and how many users and publishers send over positive feedback. We also love those of you that are verbal about what you want to see updated and changed.

Pete Cashmore, CEO of Mashable.com gave us some awesome feedback when he stated, “ShareThis is a clear leader in content sharing on the web.  In fact, ShareThis had the rare distinction of winning both the Blogger’s Choice and People’s Choice selections in the Blog Plugins category of the Open Web Awards.  Both knowledgeable commentators and the web community agree: ShareThis is a winner.”

These kinds of awards that are voted on by bloggers and the people ‘en masse’ mean a lot because it’s a good benchmark of what people want and need, and who’s giving it to them.

As a thank you - you should notice that ShareThis is moving a bit faster today. We think the widget is on an adrenaline high from all the love people have been showing it, or it could be our developers amping up the backend of the widget, who knows. ;)
